What’s Next!?

Your application has been submitted!

You have completed Step 1 and will receive an email correspondence. Here's what's next!

Step 2: District Screening

Thank you for your interest in Reading Pals Chico and for submitting your application to volunteer! Shortly, you will be contacted by one of our Volunteer Coordinators. Please ensure that any future correspondence is received by checking your email junk folder.

Next, you will be asked to do the following:

Take a LiveScan Test

Call (530) 891-3000 x132 to set an appointment
If you haven’t already, you will be asked to submit to a Live Scan test administered by the Chico Unified School District. Live Scan is inkless electronic fingerprinting that replaces the traditional ink pads. This is a simple way to submit to a criminal background check transmitted to the Department of Justice. This process helps us ensure the safety of our children.

Call 891-3000 ext 132 and set up a time to drop by the Chico Unified School District Office (1163 E. Seventh St.) M-F between the hours of 8am – 4pm. Ask for Kathy Watt or Heather Deaver. It should take no more than 15 minutes. Please bring the Livescan Form (download here) and a current picture ID.

Complete the TB Test Questionnaire

The Tuberculosis (TB) Questionnaire is a simple and cost effective way to get TB clearance results. You must contact Kathy Watt to schedule an appointment with the district nurse. Chico Unified will conduct the  questionnaire to rule-out any exposure to TB. The test only takes about 5 minutes or so to complete.

Preview these questions before seeing the district nurse:

If you would answer yes to any of the following questions then you will be unable to complete the TB questionnaire process and will need to go and get a *skin test done:

  • History of positive TB test or TB disease?
  • One or more signs and symptoms of TB? (prolonged cough, coughing up blood, fever, night sweats, weight loss, excessive fatigue)  Note: A chest x-‐ray and/or sputum examination may be necessary to rule out infectious TB.
  • Close contact with someone with infectious TB disease?
  • Foreign-‐born person? (Any country other than the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or a country in Western or Northern Europe.)
  • Traveler to high TB-‐prevalence country for more than 1 month? (Any country other than the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or a country in Western or Northern Europe.)
  • Current or former resident or employee of correctional facility, long-‐term care facility, hospital, or homeless shelter

*A TB skin test can be obtained at the following address:

Enloe’s Employee Health Center, 1405 Magnolia Ave. Suite C (530) 332-7585 (cross street 4th Ave). Parking is available behind the building. Tests are administered Monday-Wednesday & on Friday on a drop in basis from 7:30am-3:30pm (no appointment necessary, please say you are a “Reading Pal sent by Katie Good to obtain a TB skin test”. The test takes less than 10 minutes and you will  return for it to be read within 72 hours. Bring your signed copy to the orientation or email it to kgood@nvcf.org.

Step 3: Meet your Student!

Student Introduction

Following successful completion of the Live Scan and TB test, our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to set up a time for orientation of Reading Pals and to meet your student. At this orientation:
  • Please bring a copy of your TB Test.
  • Upon arrival, you will be asked to fill out an additional volunteer form required by the Chico Unified School District.
  • At the first meeting, a Volunteer Coordinator will introduce you to the school, process, and your student where you will be advised about the specific reading levels and skills list identified by their Reading Pals assessment.
  • Please attend consistently to your scheduled appointment, or call the Volunteer Coordinator if you expect to be absent; the kids are counting on us. Enjoy!
